2) Learn Strategies to close the gap in the areas this particular student is struggling with, 

3) Reassess to find out how much growth has been made,

4) Re-evaluate the instructional model based on the reassessment.

I find that most of the tutors I have worked with are always looking to learn more.  That is exactly how I was in my journey.  I felt like I couldn’t get enough training in reading.  I always wanted to know how to help a kid that struggled with acquiring vocabulary that hurt their comprehension or the kid with dyslexia that kept making mistakes on the little words.

First you need to determine how fast you would like to complete the program.  There are about 27 hours of videos that I have spread across 9 weeks.  Following this program Meg who is an art teacher (read her story in yesterday’s email if you missed it) was able to close the reading gap for her student 2 years in 3 months.  It is possible that you could results with the very first student you work with applying these strategies.  

If you do the work, come ready to learn, and schedule 3 hours a week to learning the content, I can guarantee that you will get better results with your students.  As you try out different strategies you will find that sometimes it can be trial and error with your students.  As you work with them longer you begin to realize what could be holding them back even more so than the initial assessment.  

This is why I suggest you do an assessment ever 3 months, so you build in time to re-evaluate and make sure that you are meeting your students needs.

While students fall into categories, not every student struggles exactly the same way and you need to keep that student at the forefront for making decisions.  The more you develop and hone in on this skill, the better you will get over time and it will feel easy.

At this time there are no restrictions to who can help another person in the area of tutoring.  If you go to work for a tutoring company they often will require you to have a teaching licence.  This is not the case if you are starting your own business online.  

I personally do not think that you necessarily need a teaching licence to teach something that you know you can help others with.

I am against someone who has never taught reading online, has never read any professional development books, or gotten any kind of training to improve their skills teaching reading online.  This is because you would be doing a disservice to kids that really need help.  Many of us have forgotten how we learned to read.  It just seemed to come to us naturally even though we all had teachers that worked with us to build our skills.  

Teaching reading needs to be intentional. You need to know what your student is struggling with, put that child in appropriate texts to be successful, and know when to teach certain aspects of reading to boost their confidence.  That is exactly why I designed the Reading Interventionist program.  So that you have all the tools and resources at the tip of your finger and can make the right teaching decisions at the right time.

Q5: Is this course for beginners?

 I have designed this course for both beginners and advanced reading teachers.  As an advanced reading teacher myself, sometimes I assume what people know.  This is why, when I went through the program I had Meg give me feedback on how I could help beginners.  She asked every single question that she had and I answered them and even redid some of my videos to explain things better.  I believe that this benefits both beginners and experienced reading teachers.

As a beginner you will not get stuck on the lingo; as an experienced reading teacher you will hear different explanations that may make some concepts easier to understand.  As my friend Ashley Dimercurrio said, “You just have these one liners, that make so much sense.”

After you completed this course you can say that you completed the reading interventionist program, but not that you are a certified reading interventionist or specialist.  These titles are given by higher education institutions.  But remember, these titles don’t give you any power.  They may sound good on paper, but what really matters is are you able to get results for your students.  

There are both.  I personally want to support you.  So I have the videos for you to watch and rewatch.  I have the Faceook group where you can ask questions and I come in live to the group to answer them.  This will offer support and guidance as you complete the program.

Depends on what you need.  If you have decided that reading is going to be your niche, but you are not confident on how to do the assessment and get results, then it can be extremely helpful.  As you get your students you will be able to apply the teaching strategies.
